Over 16 years ago I made a commitment that has changed my
life forever. I committed before the Lord to read my Bible completely every
single year. At this point I have read through the Bible 17-18 times and my
plan is to do this for the rest of my life here on earth.
I was encouraged to read my Bible in a year by my father at the end of my high school years. I did not succeed, however, I did complete it in two years!
Many years later, I read a biography of George Muller. If you haven’t heard of him, I highly recommend reading about this amazing and godly man! He started orphanages all over Europe and affected thousands of children’s lives. However, the most amazing thing is that he did not start them to help children, but to prove to the world and the church that God still answers prayers, and the He is faithful. George Muller never asked for anything from any person on earth. He never asked for food, clothing or money to support thousands of children. He would only ask God in prayer and trust Him! What a testimony he had.
One of the things mentioned in the biography I read was that George Muller had read his Bible over 100 times in his lifetime! Well…that made me think of how well He must have known the Scriptures intuitively by becoming so familiar with the words given to us by God. It was soon after reading the biography of George Muller that I made a commitment to read the Bible completely every year for the rest of my life.
So, how has this commitment helped me?
First, I am sure it has helped me in more ways that I could ever know. After all, this is God’s Word to mankind. It is the instruction manual for every person on the planet. How can it not, with the help of the Holy Spirit, reform my life?
Second, I have a much greater understanding how all the parts of God’s Word fit together. When I read a New Testament passage, or hear a sermon, many times I instantly think of an example or story or command from the Old Testament! This has become more and more consistent over time.
Third, as I am confronted with various aspects of life in this fallen world, I frequently can refer to an example from Scripture that addresses the very question or problem at hand. This is true whether I am dealing with a parenting issue, something at work, a situation with church and even in the political realm.
The simple reading of Scripture is a powerful tool that God uses to transform us into the men and women God desires us to be. I encourage you to join me in reading through the Bible this year!
The commitment required to read through the Bible in a year is not a great as you may think. We are talking about less than four chapters per day. Most people couple do this in only 15-20 minutes each day!
Although the time required to read your Bible is not great, it does require consistency! If you miss a few days, it is quite easy to catch up. However, if you drop the ball for a month, it is much more difficult to get done.
That is where I come in! I have developed a Bible reading
plan that I can have delivered to your inbox every day of the year. If you
have a Smartphone, for instance, you can have the passages you are assigned
with you at all times. If you have a spare 5 minutes, instead of browsing the
web or Facebook, open your email and get some of the reading done! Of course, I
would recommend a specific time and place that you set aside for the majority
of your reading. But…life happens, and things aren’t always like we plan. That
is why I want to make this a convenient as possible for you!
So, if you are convinced to give this a try, please sign up
for my Free Bible-Reading Email List.
In the future, my plan is to add a prayer each day or some
short commentary on the passage, but for this year I will focus on just the
scripture. Also, due to copyright issues, at this point I will use the text of
the King James Bible, and place a link to an online Bible website if you want
to read in a different translation. In that case, you will just need to refer
to the passages listed on the email and find them in the online Bible.
I sincerely hope that this will help many people to develop
the habit of reading their Bible every day and completing the whole Bible every
year!
Semper Reformanda!
